This weekend will be the 4th of July, a date of historical significance because it marks the birth of our nation. It was on that day in 1776 that representatives of the thirteen colonies signed a document declaring themselves to be a free and independent nation. Most of us are familiar with the contents of that document. We, of course, know it as “The Declaration of Independence”. I remember reading a story several years ago that I believe is relevant for today. During the severe cold of that winter, a reporter, who writes a syndicated column that appears in many of the major newspapers, told a story that deals with a problem that subtlely confronts many people. It was about a man whose car got stuck on the ice while he was on his way home from work. The man was white, and the community in which he was stranded was predominantly black.
