Letter From the Pastor – September 10, 2023

How do we – priests, religious, lay persons – become involved in efforts to build a human society which respects the dignity and promotes the welfare of all?  Obviously, as believers we must call attention to the moral and religious dimensions of all issues.  We must point out the demands of our Christian Faith for a just transformation of society.  We must keep the gospel values alive and well in a world that needs them desperately.                 How many of us take a stand on the side of gospel values when issues […]

Letter From the Pastor – September 3, 2023

One of the pet words of our day is tolerance.  It is a good word, but we have tried to stretch it over too great an area of life.  Sometimes we have applied it too often where it does not belong.                 Tolerance, in one sense, implies the compromise at times of one’s convictions, a yielding of ground upon important issues.  Hence, over-tolerance in moral issues has made us soft, and could leave us devoid of conviction.                 We have become tolerant about the use of drugs or alcohol; we have become […]

Letter From the Pastor – August 27, 2023

In one of our gospels, Jesus is quoted as saying, “On this rock I will build my Church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it.” When Jesus made that statement, the Church was just beginning.  It was very small and seemingly insignificant.  But now it reaches around the world and plays a vital role in the lives of millions of people.  Enemies have tried and still try to stop it, but they have failed.   Despite opposition from without and weaknesses from within, the Church has lived and flourished across the centuries. The words of Jesus have come […]

Letter to the Pastor – August 20, 2023

In the early part of this century, British philosopher Bertrand Russell was a severe critic of religion in general and of Christianity in particular.  Much of his criticism was so obviously biased that it could not be taken seriously.  But we in the Church would do well to at least consider some of the things that he said.  For example, he made this comment concerning Christians: “A few of them may enrich a community, but a world composed entirely of them would die of boredom.” That criticism cannot be lightly cast aside because it expresses the attitude of too many […]

Letter From the Pastor – August 13, 2023

We have grown so accustomed to modern conveniences that we tend to forget how dramatically they have changed our lives.  Some of you can remember when doing the family wash was an all-day job.  Ani if the weather was bad, it might carry over into the next day.  Now, most people put a load of clothes in the automatic washer, push a button, and the machine does the rest.  When the wash cycle is complete, they transfer the clothes to the automatic dryer, push another button, and in short order with minimum effort, the job is done.  That, of course, […]
